YOUR VERY SMALL BATHROOM?

think scale...

Decorating a small bathroom that expresses your personality and aesthetic can be challenging. Usually, these bathrooms are in high-traffic areas that see a lot of use. For that reason, care needs to be taken when planning how style and function can blend well together to create the best small bathroom possible. Here are some ideas to inspire you on your quest to make a big impact when designing your small bathroom:

Get rid of clutter — Before embarking on any renovation or design upgrade, take a good, hard look at the room to see whether it needs to be decluttered. The rule of thumb is that less is more, and this is especially true in small spaces. You want to make sure all the surfaces are free of everyday essentials such as toiletries, cosmetics, soaps and dental supplies. These items should be organized and concealed in interesting storage options such as wicker baskets. Clutter-free surfaces will immediately improve the quality of your small bathroom.

Storage for small spaces — An easy way to create drawer space is by installing a vanity below the sink, where folded towels can be stored. A sink skirt would also work, concealing cleaning supplies and extra rolls of toilet paper. An over-the-door shelving system concealed on the back of a nearby closet can provide additional storage for any number of bathroom items. Hooks hung on the back of the bathroom door provide space for towels or robes. If the room allows, consider built-in shelves to neatly organize your necessities in labeled wicker or canvas bins.

Add white to the room — Create a sense of spaciousness by bathing the room in varying shades of bright white. When applied to all bathroom surfaces, white lends a clean, minimalist air of elegance. White will reflect any natural or artificial light in the room to give the illusion of more space.

Accessorize the room with white towels and floor mats to continue the theme. Mirrors can also help create a feeling of spaciousness, as they also reflect light in the room. A collection of small mirrors will multiply the effect.

Go natural — According to a New York City-based interior designer, the more natural elements you include in a small bathroom, the better. Materials such as stone, wood, linen and wicker will boost the personality of the room. Stone adds a sense of durability and elegance to elements such as floors, walls and sinks. Wood, a more affordable option, softens the overall look of the room with its warm tones and texture. A houseplant that thrives in warm, humid conditions will bring a spa-like feel to any bathroom. Place plants on a windowsill, on top of the sink or tucked into a corner of a tub to create visual appeal without adding clutter.

Light it up — Replace dated fixtures with a pendant light or sconces that can freshen up the look of the bathroom. Placing decorative wall lights on either side of a bathroom mirror will provide softer, more flattering reflections. Small touches like dimmer switches, spotlights and statement lights all contribute to making the room feel more luxurious. Include exposed windows and glass shower doors so the room sparkles with either natural or artificial light.

The key to a successful small bathroom design is to make sure that all the elements are scaled to the petite proportions of the room. Make sure the room looks cohesive in terms of color palette and coordinating accessories. Contact me for more big ideas on making the most of your tiny yet terrific bathroom!
