Home Security and Safety Ideas
...making sure your home is safe and secure
There are so many ways to keep your home safe and secure. From basic practices to high-tech gadgets, certain measures can ensure that you feel comfortable both in your home and when you are away. Here are five things to keep in mind:
Locks and Entry Points
Install sturdy deadbolt locks on all exterior doors. Make sure you use them consistently. Consider reinforced strike plates and long screws for stronger door frames. Secure any sliding doors with a bar or rod in the track, as this will help prevent forced entry. Use window locks on all accessible windows, including those in the basement and on upper floors.
Lighting and Visibility
Illuminate the exterior of your home, including entryways, pathways, and dark corners. You can use motion-sensor lights or other forms of well-placed outdoor lighting. Ensure good visibility around your property as well. You can do this by trimming shrubs and trees that could otherwise serve as hiding spots for intruders. Use timers or smart home systems that turn lights on and off to simulate activity when you're away.
Security Systems and Alarms
Consider installing a professionally monitored security system. You can also opt for a do-it-yourself system instead. Either way, make sure you have sensors for your doors and windows in addition to motion detection equipment. Display alarm system signs and stickers to deter potential burglars. Also, think about installing security cameras to monitor your property both indoors and outdoors.
Home Automation and Smart Technology
Use smart locks that will allow you to control and monitor your doors remotely. Invest in a smart doorbell with a camera and intercom functionality. Utilize smart home apps to control lights, thermostats, and security systems remotely.
Safety Habits and Awareness
Create the illusion of occupancy when you are away by using timers for lights. Have a neighbor collect your mail and pick up your packages for you. Do not advertise your absence on social media or in public conversations. Also, keep valuables out of plain sight, and consider investing in a safe for important documents or items. Get to know your neighbors and establish a sense of community watch for additional protection.
