STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO START AN ART COLLECTION FOR YOUR HOME
And be confident!
Art can be considered an investment, as well as making your home look more beautiful while it builds value. However, the process of starting a collection can be overwhelming. We are fortunate to live in New Jersey where we have access to New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. for inspiration. The art world at our feet! Here are some ideas on how to get started and what to consider:
IMMERSE YOURSELF IN ART
We have so much to choose from to view and consider; galleries, museums, books, newsletters, online sites- the list is endless. Find a style you can identify with or perhaps a color pallet that excites you and gives you joy. This will set the framework for your search.
START LOCALLY
Even small towns have an art scene. Street fairs, small galleries, library installations, or cooperative art studios can be a resource. The Morris Museum in Morristown, The Center for Contemporary Art in Pluckemin, The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, MacCulloch Hall, The Stickley Museum- all are art-focused entities in the area.
START SMALL
Purchasing can be an investment- prints are a great starting point. Buy them directly from the artist or gallery they are represented by. This will allow you to have a rapport with someone connected to the piece while directly supporting the artist.
MIX STYLES
There are no rules except to buy what you love! This will always bring you the most pleasure, and you will fit it anywhere in your home. Contemporary and abstract pieces work well with antiques, as well as traditional works can add warmth to a sleek modern setting.
CELEBRATE AN OCCASION
This is a great way to qualify your budget- by giving that special moment a gift for the home. It can signify a special vacation or event in your life.
ART CONSULTANTS
Hiring a professional is another way to guide you with your decisions. They may be able to guide you with suggestions for your taste, style, and price range. They also may have exposure to a myriad of sources that would reflect and add to your collection.
Other important considerations would be if the piece of art is priced and valued correctly (by studying its provenance) and the artist’s other collections where their work is found.
