CASUAL MUDROOMS or FANCY FOYERS

Everything You Need to know to Make an Entrance Memorable

A foyer is a place to welcome your guests, and it forms the first impression of your home and lifestyle.

Also, a mudroom is one of the most hardworking spaces in a house. It’s a practical room that can be multifunctional yet still make a statement

MAKE AN IMPRESSION

In a foyer, you need some sort of mat or carpet to catch dust and grit from people’s shoes. Good lighting is huge as far as ambiance goes. Lighting choices should include a chandelier or pendants on dimmers, a pair or series of sconces, or table lamps if you have surfaces for them.

Beautiful carpets, curtains, special wall finishes, a table and importantly, accessories to personalize the space is key. These would include things like a tray, a candle, and an interesting object of some kind on your entry console.

A large open foyer with a grand staircase, emphasize the height in the room with a large chandelier. Place tall elements in the room, for example tall plants clustered on a center table or a sculpture. Draw attention to your staircase by painting the handrail and newel post black.

Even when foyers do not have a lot of square footage, it’s important for the space to function.  Use a bench or a cushioned seat that allows people to sit and put on their shoes and a mirror for last-minute touch-ups when entering or exiting. It’s also a great place to add storage or display artwork. (note the gloss paint on the ceiling).

Mudroom

For a mudroom to function optimally it needs a range of storage solutions—places for shoe and outerwear storage and a dedicated key and mail-drop area. Cabinets or lockers cater to seasonal wear, cubbies and hooks are ideal for everyday items, and a bench offers a place to sit and remove soiled shoes.

To elevate a mudroom from a utility space to a beautiful and enjoyable room, it is important to be thoughtful about using finishes and fixtures that tie into the rest of the home.  For mudrooms, include adding a wall treatment or texture such as paneling or wallcovering; add a decorative ceiling fixture instead of a recessed light for interest; use living finishes that will patina over time on hardware such as lighting, knobs and hooks, and layer in runners and baskets in sisal and seagrass.  These touches are practical as well as beautiful!

Choose a warmer color palette, cozy textiles, and a runner or throw pillows that will also introduce warmth and texture. Of course, don’t forget to add in any artwork or family photos—these elements make the space feel lived-in and loved.

Floor materials to use could be either porcelain or cement tiles because of their durability. Create natural textures with porcelain tiles that are made to look like brick and do it in a fun herringbone pattern. Cement tiles are not only practical but they can add lots of color and pattern and help set the palette for the rest of the room.

MULTIPURPOSE

A multipurpose mudroom is a smart use of space and a necessity for busy families. Consider a mudroom that doubles as a laundry area. Keep in mind that if you are installing a washer and dryer, if space allows, add a countertop above for folding clothes. Some other ideas would be to integrate a small desk or workspace, making it a convenient spot for sorting mail or working from home. Or even if you have pets, a built-in pet washing station can be a total game-changer.
