THE COLOR GREEN AND HOW TO USE IT…

This trend will have you seeing GREEN!

The color Green can be used just about anywhere to evoke a sense of calmness found in nature

Some interior designers predicted that green would trend in 2024. The color green is versatile––it can be just as lovely splashed on a wall as it is threaded throughout a pattern.  Tones of green bring a calming, natural element to any room.

The beauty of green is the variety of tones available and the range of colors that coordinate with it.

Start with a sophisticated grass and moss tone, rather than the stronger Kelly and emerald green.  Chartreuse, which is a mixture of green and yellow, also appears to be having a moment. These nature-inspired hues are a favorite among designers.

START WITH SOMETHING LESS VIBRANT

Starting with less vibrant options that mimic natural tones is best. For an especially minimal color introduction, I recommend trying a mossy green on a throw pillow.  A deep emerald on your walls can elevate your space. An olive green looks wonderful on a velvet sofa.

A dark, glossy green looks particularly great in a study or on a front door. It creates a richness, and a sense of calm. Various shades of purple work beautifully with green hues. There’s contrast between the two, but also an opportunity for a lot of depth.

Incorporate timeless greens with a neutral foundation, and opt for muted or versatile tone (to avoid dating the home quickly).  Also, backsplashes serve as an excellent opportunity to introduce greens that will stand the test of time.

Muted greens, like aged olive, are indeed trending. Soft and serene shades of green in bedrooms promote relaxation and tranquility, like the calming landscape of Ireland. Similarly, green tones in bathrooms symbolize relaxation, rejuvenation, and cleansing, giving you the sensation of diving into refreshing water!  This trending color matches our environmental concerns, while keeping nature top of mind.

Also, in powder rooms, darker greens can be considered, as they are easier to change in smaller spaces if you are not fully comfortable with the color.

Incorporate green anywhere––there are so many tones in the green spectrum to choose from.  It works best by matching the mood of the green to the mood of the space. Typically, greens resonate in indoor-outdoor transition spaces or where the view is paramount.

It is really about combinations of colors rather than one tone specifically.  Try staying away from limey, pale gray-green or sage green painted or papered walls as they can feel dated and depressingly hospital-like. Also, avoid ‘primary’ green or any green that screams ‘green.’

If you have smooth walls, don’t be afraid to go high-gloss or lacquer, especially with the darker tones. The high gloss will give otherwise flat walls an elegant shimmer and a sheen that will add a certain magic to the space.
