WESTERN INSPIRED DESIGN

     Think:  Cowgirl chic

Invited Guest Contributor:  Tracy Kaler

Cowgirl-core, the décor trend marked by distressed leather, checks, plaids, colorful quilts and rustic details inspired by the American West, is popping up all over the place.

Although cowboy culture is rooted in the 19th century and often drawn on for design inspiration, think home collections by Ralph Lauren; the fashion industry leader in the most recent revival of that comfy, casual Western look we’re seeing in residential interiors.

The rise of the cowgirl-core style in interior design reflects a broader trend that connects fashion and home décor.  With major brands like Louis Vuitton embracing this aesthetic, it’s no surprise that it’s making its way into homes as well.

The style evokes a sense of nostalgia and it can be personalized to reflect an individual’s taste. Easy and casual.

Here are some recommendations to successfully pull off this fun, adaptable style, should it intrigue you.

Blend Vintage with Modern

Cowgirl-core pairs beautifully with modern, streamlined designs, creating a chic and sophisticated space. Incorporating elements like a Moroccan light or side table can also add a worldly, eclectic touch. The key is to avoid creating a themed room. Instead, blend colors, diverse materials, and textiles that are trending, paired with complementary modern pieces.

I recommend color combinations inspired by the Southwest. Think turquoise paired with earthy neutrals to create a vibrant yet grounded look.

Consider placing chic fashion coffee table books topped with a rustic, antique spur. Vintage Western relics can add interest and authenticity. … Use great throw pillows, offering a pop of color and rich texture.

For a Western feel, think lighting made of ceramics and iron, with warmer bulbs on a dimmer. Think antlers as well.

Use Authentic Materials

Both Mission-adobe-style and the simple wood houses with low eaves including early ranch homes that mimicked the Mission style, lend themselves to this look and feel.  And ranch-styled homes,  Vintage finds along with custom pieces speak to both the practicality of Western living and the independent ethos of cowgirl core.

Use of authentic materials for both the architectural finishes and the furnishings are critical to a genuine Western feel. Painted wood flooring was a common method of ‘upgrading’ a flooring in a home when resources were limited. Covered with area rugs, a home could feel well-appointed and finished with this simple technique. And we all love simplicity!.

Mingle Rustic with Luxury

Any rough-hewn wood lends itself well to cowgirl-core. Lighter or darker woods work equally well. The same goes for metals—patinated brass, rough iron, really anything that looks a bit aged will give the Western vibes. Leather is an obvious first choice for seating—it ages well, again shows a lovely patina over time, and dovetails nicely with the general style.

To add a bit of luxe and emphasize the cowgirl-core,  include sumptuous velvets or other soft, rich fabrics in neutral tones. A crushed velvet couch adds a touch of femininity juxtaposed with the brass nail head trim. Linens are another wonderful choice, again in a neutral, but you can add touches of pattern via trims and any ornamental trimming. Add color to the space with throw pillows in contrasting fabrics as well as with the trim on draperies and seating.

For area rugs, choose hide— it could be zebra, cow or whatever speaks to you. Another great option is natural woven fiber, like jute or something similar.

Then sit back and watch the rustling of the leaves outdoors!
