Tips for Building your Dream Home Bar
Finding the right space,,,
Invited Guest Contributor TSG
Do you have an underutilized space in your home that would make for the perfect bar placement? Building a home bar has taken on a new priority and never has it been more popular.
Finding the perfect location. First
When deciding where to build a home bar, ask: What are my preferred ways to entertain? The home bar can become a focal point off of your primary space. A bar cornered neatly off the dining area or living room will be close enough to remain a piece of the big picture while still providing a cozy conversation space. Do not overlook non-traditional nooks and crannies in your home. Try transforming underutilized closets into a compact and stylish home bar as one solution.
Pick your palette
A home bar should coordinate with your kitchen’s design rather than mirroring it exactly. Let the kitchen set the tone for your design direction. Leaning into your existing color palette as a base will maintain continuity while still offering the opportunity for a pop of something new. Consider the bar to be the kitchen’s most fun and moody starting point.
Consider your functionality
At the outset of the planning process, determine what your bar will need to include to function best. Start by taking stock of the proximity to the kitchen. This will dictate whether you can utilize the dishwasher, refrigerator, wine fridge, and/or ice maker, or if the bar will need its own space. You may determine you can forego separate bar appliances, which will considerably cut down on the cost of your project, a bar sink is a nonnegotiable. The functionality to quickly rinse a glass or your cocktail shaker is quite a convenience. Plus, a sink can also offer a hidden dumping ground for used glasses during a party.
Materials matter
A less porous countertop material like quartz, which is not prone to staining, etching, and chipping like natural stone, is always a top choice for interior experts and homeowners when designing a kitchen or bar area. Quartz manufacturers such as Cambria and Vico stone offer fantastic options that mimic the color and veining patterns in marble, while still maintaining the durability that is needed for a high-use countertop. This choice alone will guarantee many years of enjoyment and enhance your resale investment.
Prioritize storage
Creating as much cabinet storage as possible should be high on your list of priorities when planning your home bar’s design. When it comes to a bar, you’re often jockeying for more storage versus more appliances. One of her favorite ways to manage this conundrum is opting for a dishwasher and refrigerator drawer. This allows for storage space below the appliances, as well as a combination of display storage and closed storage on upper walls to hide extra glassware or unsightly bar accoutrement that you may not want to display on a countertop, but still have handy.
Secure your seating
One of the greatest luxuries of a home bar is bringing that social dynamic a great watering hole provides into the comfort of your own space. That is why it’s paramount to plan for ample seating options so your guests feel at ease. If bar top seating won’t actually work with your home configuration, add lounge seating off of or in front of the bar, creating a cozy area for guests to sit and sip.
