EXPECT MORE
WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE RENOVATION
Some of the attributes to consider before starting your project:
1. Concern for healthy living
2. Focus on exercise and recreation (both indoors and out)
3. Increasing your home’s value
4. Extending your family’s quality of life
5. Modern, time-saving Conveniences
When thinking about your property’s enhancements, consider these TIPS to prepare you for your readiness to begin the project:
1. Make inquiries from friends about their experiences (whatever the project).
2. Whenever possible, consider local companies/services. They should be more responsive and knowledgeable about your particular area, and what you might expect in your neighborhood.
3. Review the company’s portfolio of work, and choose what is closest to your vision of what you want.
4. Check their professional certifications, memberships, credentials, and their licenses.
5. Get a brief description of what their process for your design will be and how they will proceed with the project.
6. Have a good idea about what you hope to accomplish, and mention your must-haves and your never-wants list.
7. Check and make sure (when several professions are involved) to identify the decision-makers (spouse, architect, etc.) and make sure everyone is on board with the plan.
8. Identify the person who will be overseeing the complete project and ask for occasional updates on time-frames, material delays, substitutions, etc.) Identify the professionals you feel are the most knowledgeable, creative, experienced, and respectful of your family and can handle the inevitable disruptions.
“Trust your instincts”
When you start to conduct your interviews to hire someone (in person):
1. Give them as many details as possible about your “likes” and “dislikes.”
2. Have examples/pictures of what you hope to accomplish.
3. Make sure they explain their company’s process- and they ask questions interviewing you!
When deciding…ask yourself if you felt a connection; Were they reliable? Did they listen well?
Check Timelines:
1. Did they meet your expectations? (designs, actual construction time, delays, etc.)
2. Ask for referrals from clients that have used their services.
3. Don’t rush! Don’t take shortcuts. Agree on a timeline and make everyone accountable. Rushing may cause ideas unexplored. You want to make sure that you make a wise investment!
4. Are you satisfied with the design and all its elements? Did you explore multiple layouts until you loved the design?
Make sure you ask for detailed budgets throughout the process. Have a general understanding of your material options and price differences. Remember: Do not rush the process, and have fun! This should not be stressful if everyone is in open and complete communication.
Remember, renovations take time and thought. They also set your home up for much appeal once you decide to sell. Make sure your budget and project are in line with comparisons in your neighborhood, and you do not become the highest-priced property on your street!
